چکیده

This paper describes an adaptive implementation of a high order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the solution of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) point contact problems. These problems arise when modelling the thin lubricating film between contacts which are under sufficiently high pressure that the elastic deformation of the contacting elements cannot be neglected. The governing equations are highly nonlinear and include a second order partial differential equation that is derived via the thin-film approximation. Furthermore, the problem features a free boundary, which models where cavitation occurs, and this is automatically captured as part of the solution process. The need for spatial adaptivity stems from the highly variable length scales that are present in typical solutions. Results are presented which demonstrate both the effectiveness and the limitations of the proposed adaptive algorithm. Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 10 October 2011

High Order Finite Element Solution of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Problems

In this thesis, a high-order finite element scheme, based upon the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method, is introduced to solve oneand two-dimensional Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL) problems (line contact and point contact). This thesis provides an introduction to elastohydrodynamic lubrication, including some history, and a description of the underlying mathematical model which is based up...

High Order Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Line Contact Problems

In this paper a high order Discontinuous Galerkin method is used to solve steady-state isothermal line contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems. This method is found to be stable across a wide range of loads and is shown to permit accurate solutions using just a small number of degrees of freedom provided suitable grids are used. A comparison is made between results obtained using this p...

Applications of Multigrid Techniques in CFD

We present a discussion of the application of multigrid techniques to a range of nonlinear problems in CFD that require state-of-the-art numerical methods to be applied in order to obtain accurate and efficient solutions. These include combining multigrid with mesh adaptivity for phase-change problems, a parallel implementation of multigrid for a thin film flow problem, and a p-version of multi...

Stabilized Finite Elements for Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Problems

In this work, we are mainly interested in modelling a particular lubrication regime known as Elastohydrodynamic (EHD). The pressure generated in the conjunction is high enough to induce a significant elastic deformation of the contacting bodies. Therefore a strong coupling between hydrodynamic and elastic effects is involved. A finite element full-system approach is used to model the lubricant ...

On the linear finite element analysis of fully-coupled point contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems

The fully coupled approach for the solution of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) point contact problems requires the numerical solution of the elasticity problem on a large 3D domain. A sufficiently fine computational mesh is required to obtain the elastic deformation solution to the necessary accuracy, and hence a sufficiently accurate EHL point contact solution. This paper discusses the ac...
